Zaanse Schans is a museum village dedicated to preserving the traditional Dutch way of life. It was created in 1960 and is operated as a piece of living history where visitors to see what life was like in the early centuries. On many Amsterdam to Budapest river cruises, Zaanse Schans is offered as an optional Amsterdam sightseeing tour.
At Zaanse Schans you'll also get to experience the workings of traditional Dutch windmills and climb to the top of one. It's quite amazing how high these structures are and the flaps of the trelliswork and canvas sails are quite loud from the top.
Windmills had many uses, including grinding corn and crushing seed to make oil. The mills at Zaanse Schans include a mustard mill and the last working oil mill in existence. Read more about our visit to Zaanse Schans HERE.
