Hotel Danieli ***** (Castello) The Hotel Danieli is an expensively - and expensive - restored palace "synonymous with the splendour and romance of Venice" located along the Riva degli Schiavoni waterfront.
The hotel's main building is the original 14th century palace of Doge Dandolo's family, a Venetian gothic landmark lavishly appointed with pink marble, stained glass, ceilings decorated with golden leaves, Murano glass chandeliers and antiques. There are panoramic views of the lagoon from the rooftop restaurant, La Terrazza Danieli. The hotel's services include child-care and meeting facilities. The Bauer Hotel behind it is equally luxurious but doesn't have the views. Gritti Palace ***** (San Marco) Directly overlooking the Grand Canal, the luxurious, and need I say it, expensive Gritti Palace is one of the world's most celebrated hotels. Commissioned in 1525 as the residence of the Doge of Venice, Andrea Gritti, the building was later used as the official residence of the Vatican's ambassadors.
Over the centuries, the Gritti Palace has welcomed kings and queens, prime ministers and presidents. Its Club del Doge restaurant is another, if costly, attraction. Hotel des Bains ***** (Lido) Remember that grand hotel in Visconti's film adaptation of Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice"? This is where Dirk Bogarde was staying when he first saw his nemesis, Tadzio. The Hotel Des Bains is situated in the centre of Lido di Venezia, 10 minutes' walk from the sea and from the Piazzale Santa Maria Elisabetta, the public boat terminal with vaporetti going all over Venice and the main islands of the lagoon Murano, Burano, Torcello.
