When to travel to Slovakia: weather and seasons

The Slovak climate lies between the temperate and continental climatic zones, with relatively warm summers, lush springs, agreeable autumns. and cold, cloudy and humid winters. Slovakia's easterly position gives it a more continental climate than that of the Czech Republic. However, because of Slovakia's diverse geography, the climate varies across the country. The south and west of the country tend to be warmer, and the lowlands have a very pleasant climate. The mountainous regions are cooler all year round.

Autumn is the driest time of year to visit Slovakia, and along with the months of spring, is a good time to visit, with fewer crowds and milder weather.

Summers are warm with temperatures in July averaging 21°C(70°F) in the Danubian lowlands, while the coldest month, January, averages -2°C (28°F), although temperatures can be as low as 23 °F (-5 °C) in mountain basins. Snow remains on the higher peaks into the summer months.

The weather is damp and highly changeable; even in the summer months, when temperatures reach the mid-20s°C, sudden heavy storms can frequently wreck an otherwise pleasantly sunny day.

Average annual temperatures fluctuate between 9 and 10 Celsius and temperatures rarely exceed 25 degrees in the summer. The mean annual temperature drops to about -4°C (25°F) in the High Tatras and rises to just above 10°C (50°F) in the Danubian lowlands.

Winter temperatures can dip below zero, and it can be far colder in the mountains where snow may be seen for long periods of the year, usually lasting from November to May in the Tatras.
In the lower regions, thick fog replaces the snow.

The Slovak mountains offer the ideal places for winter sports (especially skiing) and summer opportunities for tourists. As the most well-known area, the High Tatras has an excellent tourist infrastructure to welcome sightseeing visitors and those who come to take advantage of its slopes for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer.

But note, whilst all ski resorts are well equipped to provide visitors with a comfortable stay through the winter, hiking during these months is not advisable, particularly if you are intending to explore the many villages in the Orava and Spi regions.

The capital, Bratislava, is located on the Danube and receives an average of about 650 mm (about 26 in) of precipitation annually. The average daily temperature range in Bratislava is 16° to 26°C (61° to 79°F) in July and -3° to 2° C (27° to 36° F) in January; temperatures tend to be cooler in the mountains.

Take cool summer clothing for the warmer months with a sweater and jacket for cool evenings. In winter pack medium to heavyweight clothing with a heavy topcoat and overshoes for the mountainous areas. And in both winter and summer always take a rain coat!
