Rhine Castles – European River Cruise
The tour program promised that today we will sail through the dramatic Rhine Gorge, the most beautiful stretch of the river and that was very true. Along this stretch you will see numerous magnificent castles, which unfortunately you may not always be able to get good shots of if you have a tiny camera like I did. We were blessed with another day with splendid temperature of 27C and as such everyone was on the sundeck enjoying the scenery and views of castles.
On this part of the river, you will see the famous legendary Lorelei Rock. According to local legend, Lorelei was a beautiful young maiden who, in despair over a faithless lover, threw herself into the river. Upon her death she was transformed into a siren and from that time could be heard singing on a rock near St. Goar. Her hypnotic music lured sailors to their death.
If you’re lucky to have an informative Tour Director, as we did, you’ll receive a commentary on the Rhine castles (and there are a lot of them!) over the PA system. Some passengers were quite “castled out” and took the opportunity to have a kip before we reached Rudesheim. As for me, I regreted not taking notes of the castles as there were too many of them to remember.
